Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art through her aunt Denise. The aunt worked as an overnight nurse in order to provide her with the opportunity to study art theatre or literature. DuVernay immediately was captivated after showing her an old 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's example how art could serve as an instrument for activism. DuVernay developed a social conscious by her mother. DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has been for generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay toured Selma in the summers and was later motivated to make a documentary on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing television news at the age of a young student. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of one of the members of the jury and look through their trash. Following her disappointment with journalism by the tasks she was assigned she decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio following her graduation from college. She was hired in 1999 and launched her own firm of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Besides PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful. She is famous for her roles on American Experience, (1987) A More Perfect Union and A More Perfect Union (2009). Autumn was in the roles of Rose in A More Perfect Union (2009) as well as Anna Payne, in American Experience (1987).
